Drawn from an earlier Ilocano revolt in the mid 1600’s. Known as the Pedro Almazan Revolt, fueled by Catholic friars’ abuses. A unified revolt consisting of Ilocano Chieftains Juan Magsanop of Bangui, Gaspar Cristobal of Laoag and Pedro Almazan of San Nicolas. Cristobal set fire on the Church of Paoay, that housed the Virgin, wherein the Virgins’ crown was taken and was used to crown Almazan as the king of Ilocos.
